|Subject Overview:||This is a subject requiring advanced study and research in dental materials science that is designed to meet the needs of each individual student. It is designed to give you the opportunity to study an area of research in depth and to carry out research activities in the fields of dental materials and biomaterials science. |
The final content of your study will be determined after discussions between you and your supervisors. Depending on the nature of the research project, the subject will be structured to include as necessary: appropriate tutorials, paraclinical and clinical assignments, laboratory work, written assignments and research activities.
The subject consists of a combination of any or all of the following components: lectures, tutorials, laboratory work, paraclinical and clinical assignments, written assignments and research methods. Students will be encouraged to present their research results at conferences and to write up their work for publication in scientific journals.
Students may be required to assist in undergraduate teaching, but this will be limited to one session per week over the teaching semesters.
This subject is essentially research-orientated, but candidates may be able to carry out some clinical work relating to their research activities, and/or may be involved in the clinical evaluation of dental products.
Facilities are available for studying the structure and properties of materials used in dentistry, the interface between these materials and the hard and soft tissues of the oral environment, and standards development and certification programs. Research activities may include laboratory and/or clinical evaluation of conventional and new materials and experimental biological testing of materials.
During the first year of the course, candidates will be expected to complete two research design subjects.
|Assessment:||Assessment will be by submitting a major thesis of approximately 40,000 words that details the results of research activities carried out during the course. The examiners reserve the right, in some circumstances, to require the candidate to submit to a written and/or oral examination relating to the subject of the thesis. The thesis must be satisfactorily completed by the candidate and passed by the examiners.|
