Subject Overview: This subject provides participants with the opportunity to investigate an aspect of teaching and learning of mutual interest to them and to their departments. Each participant is required to prepare a proposal for the project, to be approved by CSHE staff, the Department adviser and head of department (since it should be of use to the department). The investigation is conducted over one semester and is the subject of a written report of 5,000 words and an oral presentation to the group.
Assessment: A hurdle requirement of a project proposal (early in semester), 20 minute presentation (30 per cent) (end of semester), written report 5, 000 words (70 per cent) (end of semester).

Generic Skills: At the completion of the subject, participants should have developed:
  • skills in planning and conducting a small investigative project;
  • a research interest in relation to teaching and learning;
  • detailed knowledge of the research literature in one area of teaching and learning;
  • skills in presenting the results of research in different formats;
  • links with senior colleagues based on a common interest in teaching-related issues.

Generic Skills

On completing this subject, participants should be able to:

  • apply theories and principles to specific contexts;
  • access, evaluate and utilise research literature;
  • manage time to complete an investigation within a limited period;
  • identify areas which would benefit from sustained investigation, possibly 'problems' to be solved;
  • present findings in a succinct report format;
  • present findings in an oral presentation.
