Subject Overview: Students will undertake practicum placements in settings in which students with hearing loss are educated. During practicum placements, students will develop skills in planning, implementing and evaluating programs. Students will have the opportunity to engage in directed observation and interaction with students with hearing loss. Students who do not have competence in Auslan to a level of Auslan Certificate 1 are expected to complete Auslan Certificate 1 by the end of Professional Practice (Hearing Impaired) 1. Auslan courses are offered at a number of TAFE colleges (or equivalent) nationally.
Assessment: Satisfactory completion of a minimum of 20 days of supervised practicum experience (60 per cent) and practicum tasks of 1,200 words (40 per cent)

Generic Skills: On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of the needs of students with a hearing loss;
  • Demonstrate an ability to interact appropriately with students with a hearing loss;
  • Develop an understanding of the general and specialized curricula and classroom practices used in the education of students with a hearing loss;
  • Demonstrate an ability to plan individualized programs catering for students of varying ages, degrees of hearing loss and stages of development;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of specialized technological equipment such as hearing aids, radio frequency aids, cochlear implants;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the techniques used to observe and assess students with a hearing loss.

Generic Skills
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  • An ability to interact with students with a hearing loss;
  • Apply specialized curricula within the wider curriculum of the school;
  • Plan and implement individualized programs for students with a hearing loss;
  • Manage technological equipment, such as, hearing aids, cochlear implants, radio frequency aids;
  • Use of techniques to observe and assess students with a hearing loss.
