Subject Overview:

This subject covers the basic areas of optical broadband access networks and wireless-over-fibre technologies.

The topics covered include:

  • Fundamentals of optical network elements
  • Optical local area networks
  • Active Ethernet
  • Ethernet passive optical networks (EPON)
  • Proposals for 10 Gb/s EPON standardisation
  • Gigabit-capable passive optical networks (GPON) and long-reach GPON
  • Local area network (LAN) emulation and protection capabilities in PON
  • Wavelength-division-multiplexed PON (WDM PON)
  • Wireless-over-fibre architectures and technologies
Assessment: An examination (50%) and progressive assessment (50%). To pass the subject as a whole a student must obtain a result of 50% or more in the final examination.
