Subject Overview: This subject introduces students to the techniques of business systems development, through an introduction to the discipline of systems analysis and design, from a traditional perspective. It is contrasted with the object-oriented approach. It focuses on preparing a business case; gathering information; investigating alternative solutions; determining the feasibility of solutions; logical and physical process, and data modelling; user interface design, structure charts and pseudo-code, implementation and change management issues.
Assessment: A 3-hour end-of-semester examination (50%), computer oriented assignments (40%) and class participation (10%).

Generic Skills: On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:
  • identify and appreciate the various phases in the systems development life cycle;
  • explain the role of a systems anaylst whose task is to work within a framework that has resource constraints;
  • prepare a business case, and understand how to initiate and plan a proposed system;
  • gather information on functional and system requirements;
  • represent the process view of a system;
  • structure logic requirements of a system;
  • document the data view of a system;
  • produce a data design rid of unwanted anomalies that make the design susceptible to errors and inefficiences;
  • explain the principles and guidelines for usable system inputs and outputs;
  • describe the process of finalising design specifications;
  • describe activities carried out during implementation and the process of maintaining information systems;
  • describe alternative methodologies used in developing information systems and the considerations involved in choosing which methodology to use; and
  • evaluate the quality of the delivered system.

On successful completion of this subject, students should have improved the following generic skills:

  • Oral and written communication;
  • Collaborative learning and team work;
  • Interpretation and analysis of cases; and
  • Problem solving.
