Course Overview:

This course is no longer offered. The Master of Philosophy (M Phil) is recommended as a suitable alternative course.

The Master of Planning and Design (by Thesis) is intended primarily for people who are qualified in a broad range of disciplines and who wish to pursue research in their field. These fields include architectural history and conservation, urban design and urban planning.

Objectives:

Upon completion of the degree the candidate will be able to:

  • demonstrate a capacity for articulating a research question and locating it in the context of existing scholarship in the field of inquiry;
  • apply advanced skills and methodologies appropriate to a particular field of inquiry;
  • identify relevant research materials and show a capacity for sustained and discerning research in relation to them; and
  • express research findings in an effective and lucid manner appropriate to the disciplin
Course Structure & Available Subjects:

Candidates will normally be required to undertake a research training subject in their first semester. Candidates may also be recommended by their supervisor to undertake a coursework component if they require further training in a specific area. However, any coursework undertaken may be equivalent to no more than one third of the total assessment weight of the Masters degree.

Entry Requirements:

Applicants are required to have a four-year university degree (or equivalent) with an overall minimum H2B (70%) result in the final year. A candidate not so qualified may be required to take preliminary studies equivalent to one year full time (100 points). Upon achieving an average of H2B (70%), the candidate may be considered for progression to Masters.
