Subject Overview:

This subject introduces management theories and their application including functions of management, leadership, power, authority, social responsibility of organisations, organisational structure, conflict resolution and change management. In particular the strategic and operational role of human resource management, human resource planning, job analysis and design, recruitment, remuneration, appraisal, development and training will be explored. This will be complemented by an overview of the industrial relations framework.

Topics include: management theories and philosophies; functions of management and leadership; power and authority in organisations; organising the workplace (organisational structures and job design); the strategic and operational role of human resource management: human resource planning, job analysis and design, recruitment and selection, staff remuneration, performance appraisal, development and training; improving organisational effectiveness; change management; groups and teams; motivation and job satisfaction; conflict management; social responsibility of organisations; overview of the Australian industrial relations framework.

Assessment: A 3-hour end-of-semester examination (50%) and assessment of tutorial worksheets (50%, equivalent to maximum of 5000 words).
