Subject Overview:

This subject examines the history and manufacture of traditional and modern materials, their properties and behaviour, and the processes of their chemical and physical deterioration.

Assessment: A 1500 word literature survey, 30% (due mid semester) and a 3500 word essay, 70% (due end of semester)

Generic Skills:
  • Upon completion of the subject students should be able to identify and characterise artefacts using their knowledge of materials and techniques and will be able to locate and assess them in their technological context. Students should also gain an understanding of the chemical and physical behaviour of cultural heritage items including basic mechanisms of deterioration.
