Course Overview:

The postgraduate diploma allows students to undertake a research project in a specialist field of study. Students will gain considerable knowledge in an area of history and philosophy of science and engage in critical assessment of the major theoretical claims of the discipline. The course provides a pathway to higher degree research for students who have not completed a four year BA (Honours) with a research component in history and philosophy of science. The Department also offers a Postgraduate Diploma in Science to those who meet the Science Faculty's requirements for admission.

Students who complete the postgraduate diploma should:

  • undertake the equivalent of an honours year of study in the discipline;
  • engage in advanced postgraduate study in history and philosophy of science
  • conduct original research leading to the presentation of an honours level thesis.

Students may choose a maximum of two honours subjects in philosophy as electives. With the approval of the course coordinator, a maximum of one elective may be also be chosen from honours subjects offered in other departments of the Faculty of Arts.
Entry Requirements:

The minimum entry requirement is:

  • an undergraduate degree with a major in history and philosophy of science or cognate discipline with a grade average of H2B (70%) or equivalent in the major
  • a Graduate Diploma in Arts (History and Philosophy of Science) with a grade average of H2B (70%) or equivalent.
