Course Overview:

The postgraduate diploma allows students to undertake a research project in a specialist field of study. Students will gain considerable knowledge in an area of Australian studies and engage in critical assessment of the major theoretical claims of the discipline. The course provides a pathway to higher degree research for students who have not completed a four year BA (Honours) with a research component in Australian studies.

Objectives:

Students who complete the postgraduate diploma should:

  • complete the equivalent of fourth year honours with a research component and obtain a recognised qualification;
  • obtain an adequate basis for pursuing advanced studies in Australian studies at Masters or PhD level;
  • develop a specialist understanding of specific areas of study, showing an understanding of the latest research directions;
  • develop a capacity for an advanced level of analysis in relation to the specific issues in Australian studies.

Note: Subject selections must be approved by the Australian studies course coordinator prior to enrolment at the Faculty of Arts. Students who wish to take subjects that are not listed must seek the approval of the coordinator of Australian studies. It is sometimes possible to take third-year subjects.
Entry Requirements:

The minimum entry requirement is:

  • an undergraduate degree with a major in Australian studies or cognate discipline and a grade average of at least H2A (75%) or equivalent in the major
or
  • a Graduate Diploma in Arts (Australian Studies) with a grade average of at least H2A (75%) or equivalent.
