Course Overview:	The graduate diploma is an introductory course of concentrated language study in Japanese. Students will acquire advanced level language skills and develop an understanding of Japanese culture. The course is an entry point to an articulated structure of higher degree study and may qualify graduates for entry to the postgraduate diploma. Objectives:	Students who complete the graduate diploma should: be able to read a wide range of material in Japanese; be competent in conversation on everyday matters; improve listening comprehension in Japanese; become familiar with Japanese writing styles: letters, resumes and short essays.
Course Structure & Available Subjects:	Beginners students complete subjects consisting of 50 points per year. Advanced students complete subjects consisting of 37.5 points for each of the first two years and 25 points for the third year. Total 100 points - subjects are 12.5 points each, unless indicated otherwise. Students considering higher degree language study are encouraged to consider additional subjects and should seek advice from the course coordinator or a Faculty course adviser regarding an appropriate enrolment.

Entry Requirements:	The minimum entry requirement is: an undergraduate degree in any discipline.

Notes:	This course is designed to be taken on a part-time basis. Students must make an appointment with the course coordinator to approve their subject selection prior to enrolment at the Faculty. Candidates with no knowledge of the language will commence at the beginners' level (Japanese 1A). Those who have completed previous study of the language will sit a placement test (held in the week preceding the first week of semester one) and commence at a higher level, as approved by the course coordinator.
