Subject Overview:

This subject examines the classical music of the 18th and 19th century with specific attention to placing the music in historical, social and cultural contexts. Selected works will be chosen in the examination of the materials and structures of music.

Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this subject students should be able to:
• Demonstrate a knowledge of the styles, genres and performance practices of the music of the 18th and 19th centuries
• Demonstrate a fundamental understanding of musical analysis and interpretation and the application of this to art music of the 18th and 19th centuries
• Understand musical change in the context of political and social developments.
• Connect their understanding of 18th and 19th century music to the aural comprehension of it.
Assessment:

Continuous: Preparation and commitment as demonstrated by performance tasks and/or a regularly updated journal of activities embracing all areas studied (50%) - Hurdle requirement 80% attendance.

Formal: A formal written examination of 1 hour duration (50%).
