Subject Overview:

Areas covered include German phonetics, pronunciation, basic grammar (including the conjugation of verbs in the present, present perfect and past tenses), dictionary usage for literal translation of texts being prepared for recital, and language coaching in these songs.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  • transcribe German texts phonetically;

  • pronounce German texts with confidence; and

  • understand the basics of grammatical syntax for literal translation and interpretation of texts.

Assessment:

Active class participation and oral and written exercises (60%), end-of-semester test including singing two songs in the language studied (40%) (or narrated songs for non-singers).
