The aims of this subject are to give an in-depth understanding of the French and francophone theatre literature and to value and critically evaluate this literature. The subject will cover textual analysis of French theatre plays from the 17 th century to 21 st century, such as Molière’s comedies, Racine’s tragedies (17 th c.), Ionesco’s absurdist dramas (20 th c.) or Yasmina Reza’s or Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt’s contemporary dramas (21 st c.). Students will have the opportunity to read or perform passages from selected plays. They will also be involved in the creative writing of theatre scenes, role-plays or a short play in French.

On successful completion of this subject, students should:

• be able to demonstrate advanced oral and written communication skills in French and become effective French communicators.
• have gained multiple disciplinary perspectives through the study of texts and documents from French theatre;
• be able to have a deep understanding of the historical and inter-textual references in the various French plays and texts and be able to utilise different approaches such as performance and emotions to explore the cultural aspects of literature.
• have achieved cultural awareness and be able to interact confidently with people from different cultures;
• be able to demonstrate leadership, self-direction, organisation, and confidence in individual and team-based work.

• 5 journal entries as homework in French (150 words each) due in weeks 2, 4. 6, 8, 10 [10%]
• In-class written test in French equivalent to 750 words in week 6 [20%]
• In-class presentation on original creative work in French / group performance in French equivalent to 1000 words in weeks 7 to 12 [30%]
• Critical and analytical essay in French totalling 1500 words due in the examination period [40%]

This subject has the following hurdle requirements:

• Regular participation in tutorials is required with a minimum of 75% attendance.
• All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.

Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day; after five working days, no late assessment will be marked. In-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked.
