Subject Overview:

This subject develops participants' research, critical thinking, reading and writing skills as well as their ability to plan and write a review of literature and present a research-topic-related review fluently and confidently. Particular attention is paid to the grammatical and structural aspects of written and spoken research discourse. Students research, synthesise, write and present on a topic that is relevant to their field of study. The subject has a supported experiential learning emphasis.
Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  • identify a topic for investigation;
  • source information on a topic for review;
  • analyse and critically evaluate a variety of academic and professional discourses;
  • identify and summarise key information in a range of sources;
  • organise and synthesise information from a range of sources;
  • identify further areas for investigation;
  • present integrated sources in a written literature review (for academic or professional settings);
  • orally present a review of integrated sources in a conference presentation.
Assessment:

Essay 1: 1,600 words (20 per cent) due week 5

Literature Review 1: 800 words (10 per cent) due week 7

Literature Review 2: 1,600 words (20 per cent) due week 10

Essay 2: 2,000 words (25 per cent) due week 12

Oral Presentation: 20 minutes, 2,000 words equivalent (25 per cent) due week 12

Attendance at all classes (tutorial/seminars/practical classes/lectures/labs) is obligatory. Failure to attend 80% of classes will normally result in failure in the subject.
