Subject Overview:

Course content includes:
• Genetic, environmental and neurobiological vulnerability to psychosis
• Assessment and management of at-risk mental state
• Access to treatment and reducing the duration of untreated psychosis
• Assessment and treatment of first episode psychosis
• Early psychosis service models
Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this subject students should be able to:

  • Outline the processes involved in the assessment and treatment of young people at risk of psychosis
  • Describe strategies for reducing the duration of untreated psychosis in young people
  • Outline stages in the recovery from first episode psychosis
  • Describe optimal interventions during the critical period
  • Design, implement and evaluate early psychosis service models
Assessment:
  • 25% weekly quizzes on lecture content (4 multiple choice questions per week for 5 weeks and 5 multiple choice questions in the last week = 25 questions in all)
  • 25% audio/video presentation, 15 minutes in length, due Week 6 of the subject
  • 50% major assignment (essay), 3,000 words due Week 6 of the subject
