The subject aims to provide the students with opportunities to experience a range of clinical presentations across the life span and to begin functioning as a clinical psychologist in Singapore, under the supervision of a field supervisor. Students will receive experience in history taking, conducting a mental state examination, arriving at a case formulation and making treatment plans. Under supervision, students will be given the opportunity to develop competency in the provision of psychological treatments to individuals and (where appropriate) groups. In addition, the subject aims to give the student experience of professional psychology practice, including professional presentation, report writing and record keeping, managing a clinical caseload, and liaison with other professional practitioners.

The placement aims to provide trainees with

• exposure to a range of psychopathology
• the opportunity to conduct diagnostic interviews in a clinical setting
• the opportunity to conduct a variety of psychological assessments (e.g., psychometric and projective testing, observational assessments and client self-monitoring)
• the opportunity to be actively involved in the planning and implementation of psychological interventions in two of individual, family, and group formats
• exposure to the wider experience of professional clinical psychology practive in areas such as clinical intake and review meetings, administrative and evaluative functions, in-service education, and so on

Completion of hurdle tasks:

• 50 days of attendance at placement (each day equal to 7.5 hours)
• placement contract
• mid and end-of-placement reviews completed by supervisor
• regular attendance at clinical case conferences
• four mental health state examination (MSE) reports reviewed by supervisor
• six complete case histories (including MSE, formulation and psychometric assessment where required) to be reviewed by supervisor
• students must provide evidence that log books are checked and endorsed by their primary placement supervisor every 30 hours of placement or fortnightly (whichever occurs first)

Assessment of placement goals on a pass/fail basis (assessment is undertaken by the Placement Coordinator, in consultation with the supervisor, on the basis of satisfactory attainment of placement goals following APAC accreditation placement standards):

• experience in the administration and interpretation of a range of psychological assessment strategies and the writing of psychological reports;
• understanding of typical courses and prognoses of disorders, and capacity to develop appropriate treatment and management plans;
• experience with a variety of intervention strategies, which may include case management, individual therapy, family therapy and/or group interventions, and to be capable of evaluating those interventions;
• experience in functioning as an independent clinical psychologist within the facility, although closely supervised by supervisors.

Subject will have pass/fail outcome where each individual hurdle task and placement goal must be completed/passed in order to achieve a pass outcome for the subject.
