Research Project in Ageing

Core subjects required for the Master of Ageing course: Body of Ageing, Ageing in Society, Economics of Ageing and Ethics of Ageing.

Students are expected to have undertaken the majority of the Master of Ageing coursework prior to enrolling in this subject.

This subject is one of two subject options available within the Master of Ageing that will be accepted as part of the capstone experience. Both capstone subjects draw on and integrate disciplinary knowledge and skills to build on the foundational subjects in the course and provide a culminating experience.

Students extend the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the course into a research project in ageing to further their learning whilst addressing actual issues. It requires autonomy and expert judgement in the application of specialised knowledge and skills acquired previously in the course.

This subject is an opportunity for students to integrate knowledge and research skills to develop, frame and address a research question in the area of ageing. The research question can be answered by a critical review of the literature, by an analysis of an existing data set or by the development of a research protocol. Normally, students complete the majority of their coursework requirements before being enrolled for supervision in the Research Project in Ageing subject.

On completion of this subject, students will be able to:

• Plan and execute a substantial research-based project.
• Develop and frame a research question with an appropriate research method.
• Critically review the existing literature in an area of ageing.
• Summarise, analyse and interpret research findings.
• Present research findings in a written report of an appropriate academic standard.
• Communicate research findings effectively and appropriately in oral form to an audience.

• Weekly contribution to online discussions held throughout the semester (10%)
• 15 minute oral presentation with structured peer feedback held at the end of Term 3 (20%)
• 15 minute oral presentation at the end of Term 4 (20%)
• A Written research report (7,000 to 8,000 words) due at the end of Term 4 (50%) {hurdle requirement of at least 50% passing mark}.

Students will have access to electronic copies of relevant readings.

This subject is not available as a breadth subject.
