Students will undertake this subject as fully participating members of the Victorian Opera Company at its rehearsal and performance studios located at Horti Hall in Victoria Street, Melbourne.

Through involvement with Victorian Opera as members of the chorus and in covering of minor principal roles, vocal students will be involved in developing a variety of advanced operatic skills, knowledge and understandings though rehearsals and practical workshops that will include vocal coaching, acting, stagecraft and movement training, role development and characterisation, and ensemble work. Students will receive thorough technical and artistic training to cope with all stylistic demands of their singing voice and develop a practical knowledge of repertoire covering all major styles of opera.

Through involvement with Victorian Opera repetiteur students will be involved in developing a variety of advanced vocal coaching skills, knowledge and understandings though rehearsals and practical workshops that will include all aspects of the repetieurs' craft. Students will receive thorough technical and artistic training to cope with all stylistic demands of their repetiteur skills and develop a practical knowledge of repertoire covering all major styles of opera.

On completion of the subject vocal students will be able to:

• demonstrate professional level skills in vocal production, in acting, stagecraft and movement, and in the interpretation of minor principal roles;
• demonstrate understanding and application of the principles of opera production relevant to their roles within a fully professional opera company;
• perform within the chorus and minor principal roles with technical and musical capability; and
• demonstrate a knowledge of the history, stylistic conventions and interpretive framework of the operas constituting the Victorian Opera’s productions during the semester.

On completion of the subject repetiteur students will be able to:

• demonstrate professional level skills in vocal coaching;
• demonstrate understanding and application of the principles of opera production relevant to the repetiteur role within a fully professional opera company;
• assist in the preparation of singers to perform within the chorus and minor principal roles with technical and musical capability; and
• demonstrate a knowledge of the history, stylistic conventions and interpretive framework of the operas constituting the Victorian Opera’s productions during the semester.

50% Continuous assessment of studio-based work including preparation of parts, research of roles/concert work, individual or sectional rehearsal. Assessment throughout the semester but including formal monthly feedback to each student.

50% Concert-based assessment of a principal role in a Victorian Opera production tested at performances throughout the semester as directed.
