Time Commitment: Contact Hours: A 30-minute consultation with the subject co-ordinator at the start of semester, 60 hours (7.5 days) of work placement, four 2-hour seminars during semester.

Subject Overview:

This subject integrates academic learning and the development of employability skills through a program of seminars and professional work experience. Issues such as workplace cultures and expectations will be explored, with an emphasis on the importance of personal initiative, in conjunction with a supervised work placement program with an approved music business/organisation.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • reflect upon, articulate and communicate personal objectives and competencies related to establishing a career in music
  • establish career-related connections with individuals and organisations beyond the university
  • develop evidence of an ability to become an integral member of a professional work environment, applying knowledge and skills acquired during academic studies to the requirements of the workplace
  • identify and appraise key internal and external factors relevant to an organisation that influence the accomplishment of its mission and principal goals
  • critically evaluate their work placement experience and related development of skills and knowledge
Assessment:
  • Report providing details of the selected work placement, including reasons, means of approach and personal aims (1500 words) - Week 3 (25%)
  • 10-minute in-class presentation (equivalent to 1500 words) - During Semester (25%)
  • Detailed report of work placement, including a critical reflective appraisal of the placement organisation, duties performed, and learning outcomes (2,000 words) - Week 12 (50%)

Hurdle requirement: Satisfactory supervisor’s evaluation
