EMA Career Project

This subject has the following teaching availabilities in 2016:

1. Admission into the MC-EMA Executive Master of Arts program.
2. Subject must be completed in the final 100 points of the program.

This subject involves a supervised research report or essay. The project will embody the results of the student’s own research and it is expected that the research topic will relate to an aspect of the student’s career development. It is strongly advised that the student contact the EMA Course Coordinator in the semester prior to enrolment in this subject so that appropriate supervision and subject expectations can be discussed.

On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:

• demonstrate a specialist understanding of the topic being studied;
• show advanced skills of analysis pertinent to the topic;
• demonstrate advanced research methods skills;
• show a detailed sense of current debates and issues debates in the topic area;
• demonstrate an ability to undertake critical independent research;
• demonstrate a capacity to communicate research effectively and persuasively in written form; and
• demonstrate a developed sense of career direction or progression.

1. A 250-word project proposal (5%), due at the end of week 3.
2. A 250-word project outline (5%), due at the end of week 6.
3. A 4,500-word research report or thesis (90%), with first draft due end of week 8 and the final draft due one week after end of semester.

Hurdle Requirements: The following hurdle requirements must be met in order for students to be eligible to submit the final report or thesis:

• Submit a 200-word project proposal, by the end of week 1.
• Submit a 2500-word draft mid-way through semester.
• Submit a full draft of the report/thesis 2 weeks before the end of semester.
• Attend at least 4 supervisory meetings.

This subject is not available as a breadth subject.

Students who successfully comeplete this subject should be able to:

• conceptualise and plan a substantial project of original research;
• present material in draft form and engage productively with a supervisor;
• consolidate and enhance established skills in engaging creatively with a critical field;
• synthesise critical arguments and debates;
• enhance drafting and writing skills, in both a critical and creative manner; and
• manage time and study resources over a sustained research project.
