Italian Honours Language Seminar 1

This subject has the following teaching availabilities in 2016:

Admission to the Graduate Diploma in Arts (Advanced) or fourth-year honours in Italian.

This subject focuses on a variety of authentic materials ranging from literary and non-literary texts to audio-visual activities as a stimulus for discussion and conversation practice. On completion of this subject, students should have acquired the ability to comprehend, analyse and interpret complex texts, both literary and non-literary, and the ability to use actively a variety of registers and styles in contemporary Italian.

On successful completion of this subject, students should:

• have acquired the ability to comprehend, analyse and interpret complex texts, both literary and non-literary;
• have developed the ability to use actively a variety of registers and styles in contemporary Italian;
• have acquired advanced translation skills from and into Italian.

• Three take-home assignments of 500 words each 30% (due throughout the semester)
• A 20-minute class presentation 20% (commencing at the start of semester and finishing at the end of semester)
• A take home assignment 40% (due at the end of semester)
• Class participation 10%.

This subject has the following hurdle requirements:

• Regular participation in tutorials is required with a minimum of 75% attendance.
• All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.

Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day and in-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked.

Students who successfully complete this subject should:

• have gained an understanding of social, political, historical and cultural contexts and international awareness/openness to the world: through the contextualisation of judgements and knowledge, developing a critical self-awareness, being open to new ideas and new aspects of Italian culture, and by formulating arguments.
• be able to communicate knowledge intelligibly and economically: through essay and assignment writing, tutorial discussion and class presentations.
• have gained skills in public speaking and confidence in self-expression through tutorial participation and class presentations.
