Students undertake field trip experiences that will require them to be physically capable of undertaking outdoor field work in remote locations. Due to variability of transportation and remoteness, students need to be both mobile and self-reliant.

340 hours total time commitment

Usually completion of 300 points including at least 50 points from subjects in geography, resource management, urban planning, environmental studies or environmental science at second/third year or by permission of the subject coordinator. Students enrolled in the Master of Contemporary Asian Analysis or Development Studies and student completing a Major in Asian Studies within the BA degree are exempt from these prerequisites.

This subject consists of a two-week field class in China in July with some pre-departure (in semester 1) and post-field-trip (in semester 2) workshops/seminars in Melbourne. The subject is designed to develop students' interests in Asia, in China in particular, and in the interactions between society, economy, government, and the environment. While in China, students will interact with local communities, academics and environmental managers who will inform them about issues and processes in China. These interactions will be supplemented by site visits and household interviews. The field trip will be under the supervision of the subject coordinator. Students are responsible for the cost of travel, accommodation and food.

• Have become familiar with environmental conditions in a society undergoing rapid economic and social change.
• Have acquired an understanding of methods of research and fieldwork in non-Western societies.
• Have designed and executed a group research project and poster.
• Have learnt to work effectively in groups.

1) 2000-word written reflection on themes explored during the field trip (25%) written on the last day of the fieldtrip;

2) academic poster – about 80 hour work (25%) due the fourth Monday of semester 2;

3) your own essay based on group work (arising from group project work) of 4500 words (50%) due the first Monday after the non-teaching week in semester two.

It is a hurdle requirement that students must attend the field trip.
