Graduate Certificate in Arts

A Graduate Certificate in Arts allows you to complete a comprehensive six-month course of study, choosing from more than 25 discipline areas. It is particularly useful if you are returning to tertiary study after time away from an academic environment.

Students who complete the Graduate Certificate in Arts should:

• Demonstrate an independent approach to knowledge that uses rigorous methods of inquiry and appropriate theories and methodologies that are applied with intellectual honesty and a respect for ethical values; and
• Apply critical and analytical skills and methods to the identification and resolution of problems within complex changing social contexts; and
• Act as informed and critically discriminating participants within the community of scholars, as citizens and in the work force; and
• Communicate effectively; and
• Commit to continuous learning; and
• Be proficient in the use of appropriate modern technologies, such as the computer and other information technology systems, for the acquisition, processing and interpretation of data.

No Specialisation:

Subjects totalling 50 points chosen from any of the areas below, including:

• Maximum of 12.5 points at first-year level
• Minimum of 12.5 points at fourth-year level or above

With Specialisation:

Subjects totalling 50 points as outlined below.

Specialisations

Students in this Graduate Certificate of Arts must choose subjects offered by the Faculty of Arts.

1. In order to be considered for entry, applicants must have completed:

• an undergraduate degree, or equivalent.

Meeting this requirement does not guarantee selection.

2. In ranking applications, the Selection Committee will consider:

• prior academic performance.

3. The Selection Committee may seek further information to clarify any aspect of an application in accordance with the Academic Board rules on the use of selection instruments.

4. Applicants are required to satisfy the university’s English language requirements for graduate courses. For those applicants seeking to meet these requirements by one of the standard tests approved by the Academic Board, performance band 6.5 is required.

Successful completion of a Graduate Certificate may allow you to enrol in the GD-ARTS Graduate Diploma in Arts or some Masters by Coursework programs.
