Clinical Assessment & Course Evaluation

To enrol in this subject, you must be admitted in the Graduate Diploma in Clinical Education (GD-CLINED) or the Master of Clinical Education (MC-CLINED). This subject is not available for students admitted in any other courses.

This subject builds on concepts first considered in the prerequisite subject “Assessing Clinical Learners” (EDUC90743). It is recommended that those undertaking this subject have some experience in delivering and/or coordinating clinical assessments and coursework for health professionals.

‘Clinical Assessment and Course Evaluation’ considers the similarities and differences involved in judging the performance of clinical learners while also evaluating the education they receive. Whereas the foundation subject (“Assessing Clinical Learners”) focussed on the basics of the main assessment formats used by clinical teachers, this subject goes into greater depth on designing and implementing highly-performing assessment regimens. It also explores key issues in measuring the quality of health professional education programs and their associated assessments.

By completing this subject, participants should be able to:

• understand and explain key characteristics of assessment methods including reliability, validity, feasibility, fairness
• design or adapt assessment programs that are appropriate for specific clinical contexts
• interpret and report the results of assessments and their psychometric performance
• evaluate the effectiveness, appropriateness and efficiency of assessments and educational programs

• Written paper on course evaluation (2500 words) - 50%
• Written paper on clinical assessment (2500 words) - 50%

• apply theories and principles to specific clinical education program and assessment contexts;
• access and use relevant research literature;
• identify and implement best practice in clinical assessment and course evaluation;
