Literature in Second Language Education

Experience in teaching or learning literature in a second language.

A study of the possible uses of literature within the second language curriculum. These uses range on a continuum from literature as a resource for language development to literature as an object for study.The course will examine what teachers and learners can do with literature in the classroom, the language of literature and appropriate teaching methods, the teaching of poetry, short stories, the novel, drama and film. Student assessment and program evaluation in literature lessons and courses as well as possible areas for research and development are also included. Aspects of literary theory will be considered particularly in relation to their pedagogical implications.

• Demonstrate a sound understanding of the roles of literature in second language education.
• Identify, describe and critically evaluate different approaches to the teaching of literature in second language education.
• Design of a literature-based course for a specific second language learning context.

There are three items of assessment:

• Online forum contributions during the semester (2000 words; 20 per cent).
• Assignment requiring critical analysis of a key issue in the teaching of literature in second language education, due mid-semester (3,000 words; 30 per cent).
• Assignment requiring the design of a literature-based course for a specific second language learning context due end of semester (5,000 words; 50 per cent).

There are two hurdle requirements:

• Participation in regular short tasks and activities based on class work.
• Evidence of completion of set reading and out of class excercises on each topic.

This subject has a minimum hurdle requirement of 80% attendance at all tutorials, seminars and workshops.

This subject is not available as a breadth subject.

• An advanced understanding of the international context and sensitivities of the specialist area.
