This subject examines the place of forms of ritual and performance in community life and its relationship to CCD practice. The subject will consider typologies of ritual, modes and sites of community performance and engage with debates around intercultural exchanges.

On completion of this subject students will:

• critically engage with concepts of community performance and ritual;
• show and demonstrate an understanding of the breadth of forms of ritual and performance in contemporary culture;
• consider the relationships between forms of community performance and CCD practice.

Contribution and participation in seminar discussions (10%); written assignment or equivalent project documentation 4,000 words (50%) due in the examination period with feedback; seminar presentation at the end of semester (40%).

Hurdle requirements:
Students must attend 80% of all scheduled classes and attempt all elements of assessment to be eligible for a pass in this subject.

• understand and appreciate how all the arts connect with the broader society and contribute to its social and economic development, and
• understand their relationship with and responsibility to their cultural environment and society.
