Students enrolled in this subject will prepare a practice based research thesis on a topic with practical relevance to current property industry problems completed under supervision of an academic and a designated party at the host organization. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a 15 day (or equivalent) internship with an external organisation in the commercial property development, investment, valuation, management and consultancy field to facilitate the research. They will develop and complete a specific project in discussion with the host organisation and the Subject Coordinator. The practice based research experience will enable students to extend and apply the knowledge acquired through the Master of Property coursework subjects, will provide students with a valuable research at profession experience, and will extend their professional networks. The subject will facilitate the application of knowledge acquired through coursework to a research problem facing professional workplace.

• Design, implement and produce a practice based research thesis in a scholarly manner.
• Demonstrate an understanding of research management skills in an industry setting.
• Demonstrate the capacity to think originally and independently within the chosen area of research.
• Demonstrate the ability to apply relevant research methodologies rigorously and appropriately.

• A 1000 word work-plan developed in consultation with the host organisation and the Subject Coordinator.Due within two weeks of beginning the practice based thesis, 20%;
• Oral presentation, due two weeks before conclusion of the internship (hurdle );
• Property practice thesis of 4500 words based on research completed in the prerequisite subject, ABPL90363 Property Research and Analysis. The 4500 words required for this piece of assessment is additional to work completed for prerequisite subject ABPL90363 Property Research and Analysis. Writing submitted as part of the prerequisite subject may not be submitted as part of this subject. Due within two weeks of the conclusion of the internship 80%.

Hurdle requirement: Satisfactory completion of oral presentation.

This subject is not available as a breadth subject.

Students will acquire a specific set of skills related to completing a research/problem solving task in a professional environment. Specific skills include:

• Advanced communication skills (written and verbal) appropriate to professional contexts;
• Ability to apply broad theoretical and cross-disciplinary knowledge about heritage to a specific case-study or project;
• Project management skills, including scoping projects, developing timelines and meeting deadlines;
• Research and critical thinking as applied to a professional context;
• Interpersonal skills, including the capacity to work effectively in a professional setting, and with a professional team.
