Subject Overview:

Travelling studios are working laboratories for design thought and production and involve the exploration of complex, real-life issues. They expose students to unfamiliar cultures, places and people, and stimulate their ability to think creatively and solve problems.

These studios aim to bring together students from architecture, urban design, landscape and planning streams and encourage an interdisciplinary focus.

Pre-trip briefings or seminars will precede the travel component of the studio. The studio will incur travel costs, in addition to tuition fees. Faculty subsidies may be available.

Specific information about Travelling Studio (Brazil)

This Travelling Studio will be carried out in partnership with the Federal University of Parana, University of Sao Paulo and Londrina State University with the aim to explore a wide spectrum of hopes and fears around design and construction approaches that can be applied to low cost social housing developments in Brazil. In this studio, ZEMCH movement being initiated in Brazilian contexts today will be employed.

ZEMCH is an acronym of ‘Zero Energy Mass Custom Homes’ reflecting global demand for sustainable housing development. Sustainability embraces housing economy and adequacy beyond the legitimacy in which the quality barely coincides with individuals' various needs, desires and expectations. In response to growing global warming issues and the constant increase of energy prices, low cost housing in Brazil needs to be designed, constructed and operated more responsibly to secure the low to zero energy use.

This ZEMCH Travelling Studio will investigate a set of architectural, building and planning solutions that can be applied to the delivery of socially, economically and environmentally sustainable homes in Brazil and the local community development and evolution. This studio will provide students with opportunities to visit some social housing developments in Londrina, attend joint lectures to be delivered by renowned local scholars, and experience a ZEMCH design development workshop at the University of Sao Paulo, where students, teachers and industry representatives will join together to maximise the interdisciplinary R&D activities that aim to demonstrate how to design the future of low cost and energy social housing developments in Brazil.
