MA (AS&ST) Philosophy

The masters program allows students to combine coursework with extensive independent research in philosophy. The thesis should demonstrate a critical application of specialist knowledge and make an independent contribution to existing research. Candidates may advance to the Doctor of Philosophy degree after successful completion of the masters or may apply to convert to the PhD at an earlier stage. An honours grade of at least H3 (65%) average must be attained in the respective thesis and advanced seminar components of the course to qualify for the award of the masters.

Students who complete the Master of Arts (Advanced Seminar & Shorter Thesis) in this area of specialisation should be able to:

• undertake specialised study in a branch of philosophy of their choice;
• demonstrate research skills required for advanced research in philosophy and an understanding of the research methods in philosophy; and
• complete a minor thesis, based on original research and reveal an awareness of current theoretical directions in their chosen field.

Duration: 1.5 years full-time / 3 years part-time

Program Requirements -

• 20,000-22,000 word thesis
• two compulsory subjects (25 points)

The results from the thesis and thecoursework subjects are consolidated towards the final result for the course.
