Hebrew

The Hebrew language program is offered from beginners to advanced levels and places great emphasis on its culture, tradition and development as the language of the Bible and the language of modern Israel. Hebrew is one of the oldest languages in the world, and has had an enormous impact on Western culture. The study of language is complemented by subjects that explore Jewish culture, literature and society. Through the study of modern authors and poets, these subjects aim to provide students with knowledge of the language in contemporary contexts and to equip them with skills to undertake critical literary analysis in both Hebrew and English.

Students who complete this diploma will:

• Obtain an in-depth understanding and knowledge of the Hebrew language, culture and society in accordance with their entry level;
• Acquire effective oral, aural and written communication skills that will enable them to act confidently in Hebrew-speaking environments and cultures, as well as the research and analytical skills to explore and critically evaluate issues from an array of disciplinary, linguistic and political perspectives;
• Gain knowledge of the social and cultural diversity of the Israel and the global Jewish community and develop the skills to work with people from a wide-spectrum of intercultural backgrounds;
• Display an informed, expansive and detailed knowledge of more than one period or culture of the Jewish and Israeli past by demonstrating a critical comprehension of a range of conceptual approaches to interpreting the past;
• Apply relevant research and analytical skills in conducting research on a defined topic according to the methodological and ethical conventions of the discipline and possess the ability to examine and evaluate multiple national and international debates in the field of Hebrew and Jewish studies;
• Demonstrate a high level of clarity and fluency in communication and collaboration, including oral and written presentation of evidence-based narratives;
• Show the ability to be self-motivated, reflective and goal-oriented and have the capacity to set goals and manage time and priorities in working effectively both independently and in groups.

Students completing Hebrew and Jewish Studies in the Diploma in Languages will need to complete:

• 25 points at level one,
• 37.5 points at level two and
• 37.5 points at level three.

Level 1

Students are required to complete the following subjects (25 points) at level 1.

Level 2

Students are required to complete the following subjects and one level 2 elective (a total of 37.50 points).

Level 3

Students are required to complete the following subjects and one level 3 elective (a total of 37.50 points).

Students are required to complete the following subjects (25 points) at level 1.

Level 2

Students are required to complete the following subjects and one level 2 elective (a total of 37.5 points).

Level 3

Students are required to complete the following subject and two level 3 electives (a total of 37.5 points).
