Indonesian

The undergraduate program in Indonesian comprises coursework designed to build students' knowledge and skills in understanding and analysing Indonesian language and society.

Indonesian language subjects are organised in a progressive sequence (of units) from Indonesian 1 through to Indonesian 6, with 4 additional advanced units. Entry points are determined by the student’s background in the language, placement testing, prerequisites, or at the discretion of the Indonesian program. Students normally progress through the subjects in consecutive order. Mid-year entry is also possible, subject to appropriate prior experience and approval from the convenor of the Indonesian program.

Students who complete a major in Indonesian should:

• Gain an in-depth knowledge of Indonesian language, culture and society, relative to their entry level
• Develop a capacity to combine knowledge of the Indonesian language with Southeast Asian area studies and one or more disciplines.
• Acquire effective oral and written communication skills and develop the research and inquiry skills to examine complex issues from multiple disciplinary perspectives.
• Gain knowledge of the social and cultural diversity of the Southeast Asian region and develop the skills to work with people from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
• Develop an understanding of the local, national and global issues in the Southeast Asian region and have the capacity to work effectively across disciplines and cultures.
• Graduates will be able to be leaders in promoting Asian Literacy in their workplaces and communities.
• Gain the ability to set goals and manage time and priorities and work effectively both independently and in groups.

Students study Indonesian as a Major (100 points) or Minor (75 points) through a progression of six language subjects. The Major also includes an additional two electives.

Common entry points for the Major and Minor are as follows:

• Indonesian 1: Students who have never studied Indonesian before or have only rudimentary knowledge of the language usually enter the progression at Indonesian 1.
• Indonesian 3: Students who have completed VCE Indonesian (Second Language), Standard IB Indonesian or have an equivalent language level usually enter the progression at Indonesian 3.
• Indonesian 5: Students who perform at an advanced level in Indonesian, for example those who have completed VCE Indonesian (First Language) or have lived or studied in Indonesia, usually enter at Indonesian 5.
• Advanced Indonesian: Students with a very advanced level of language study, including for example those who attended several years of Indonesian or Malay medium school or have worked several years in an Indonesian or Malay speaking environment would normally enter the Advanced Indonesian entry point. The Advanced Indonesian entry point is only available as a minor.

Students will have their appropriate entry point determined by the Indonesian Program, based on evidence of prior learning and/or results of a placement test as required. Students completing a major in Indonesian will usually undertake 25 points at level one, 37.5 points at level two and 37.5 points at level three. Students completing a minor in Indonesian will usually undertake 25 points at level one, 25 points at level two and 25 points at level three.

INDONESIAN 1 ENTRY POINT

Indonesian 1 entry point- Level 1

Students completing an Indonesian major or minor with an Indonesian 1 entry point are required to complete the following subjects (25 points).

Indonesian 1 entry point- Level 2

Students completing the Indonesian major with an Indonesian 1 entry point are required to complete the following subjects (25 points) and one level 2 elective subject (12.5 points) (see list of electives below).

Students completing the Indonesian minor are only required to complete Indonesian 3 and Indonesian 4 (25 points).

Indonesian 1 entry point - Level 3

Students completing the Indonesian major with an Indonesian 1 entry point are required to complete the following subjects (25 points) and one level 3 elective subject (12.5 points) (see list of electives below).

Students completing the Indonesian minor are only required to complete Indonesian 5 and Indonesian 6 (25 points).

INDONESIAN 3 ENTRY POINT

Indonesian 3 entry point - Level 1

Students completing an Indonesian major or minor with an Indonesian 3 entry point are required to complete the following subjects (25 points).

Indonesian 3 entry point - Level 2

Students completing the Indonesian major with an Indonesian 3 entry point are required to complete the following subjects (25 points) and one level 2 elective subject (12.5 points) (see list of electives below).

Students completing the Indonesian minor are only required to complete Indonesian 5 and Indonesian 6 (25 points).

Indonesian 3 entry point - Level 3

Students completing the Indonesian major with an Indonesian 3 entry point are required to complete two of the following subjects at level 3 (25 Points) and one level 3 elective subject (12.5 points) (see list of electives below).

Students completing the Indonesian minor are only required to complete two of the following subjects (25 points).

INDONESIAN 5 ENTRY POINT

Indonesian entry point 5 - Level 1

Students completing an Indonesian major or minor with an Indonesian 5 entry point are required to complete the following subjects (25 points).

Indonesian entry point 5 - Level 2

Students completing the Indonesian major with an Indonesian 5 entry point are required to complete two of the following subjects at level 2 (25 Points) and one level 2 elective subject (12.5 points) (see list of electives below).

Students completing the Indonesian minor are only required to complete two of the following subjects (25 points).

Indonesian entry point 5 - Level 3

Students completing the Indonesian major with an Indonesian 5 entry point are required to complete two of the following subjects (that they have not previously completed) at level 3 (25 Points) and one level 3 elective subject (12.5 points) (see list of electives below).

Students completing the Indonesian minor are only required to complete two of the following subjects (that they have not already completed) (25 points).

ADVANCED INDONESIAN ENTRY POINT

Advanced Indonesian entry point - Level 1

Students completing the Indonesian minor with an Advanced entry point are required to complete two of the following subjects at level 1 (25 points).

Advanced Indonesian entry point - Level 2

Students completing the Indonesian minor with an Advanced entry point are required to complete one of the following subjects (that they have not already completed previously) at level 2 (12.5 points) and one level 2 elective subject (12.5 points) (see list of electives below).

Advanced Indonesian entry point - Level 3

Students completing the Indonesian minor with an Advanced entry point are required to complete one of following subjects (that they have not already completed previously) at Level 3 (12.5 points) and one level 3 elective subject (12.5 points) (see list of electives below).
