Chinese

The Chinese language program at the University of Melbourne is one of the largest Chinese programs in Australia. The language subjects (taught at a range of levels, from beginner to advanced) are designed to maximise acquisition of the language and to develop their communication skills in various types of texts, interactional contexts and strategic aspects of meaning making. The curriculum also allows students to develop a broad understanding of cultural, social and historical aspects of China. Chinese language subjects are organised in a progressive sequence (of units) from Chinese 1 through to Chinese 10. Entry and exit points are determined by the student's background in the language, placement testing, prerequisites or at the discretion of the Chinese program. Students normally progress through the subjects in consecutive order. Mid-year entry is also possible into subjects with even numbers, subject to appropriate prior experience and approval from the head of the Chinese program.

Students who complete this major will:

• Gain an in-depth knowledge of Chinese language, culture and society, relative to their entry level
• Develop a capacity to combine knowledge of the Chinese language with other disciplines.
• Gain knowledge of the social and cultural diversity of China and develop the skills to work with people from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
• Gain the ability to set goals and manage time and priorities and work effectively both independently and in groups.

Students (except those entering at Chinese 1 entry point) complete the Chinese major through a progression of eight language subjects (100 points). Students completing the major commencing at Chinese 1 entry point must complete ten subjects (125 points). A Chinese minor is through a progression of six language subjects (75 points).

Due to the wide range of student language proficiency levels (from beginners to fluent), the Chinese program provides seven language entry points, the super advanced entry point is only available as a minor, available to students who have completed secondary education in a Chinese environment.

The sequence is as follows for each entry point for the Major and Minor:

• Chinese 1 entry point: Students with no previous knowledge of the language usually enter the progression at Chinese 1.
• Chinese 3A entry point: Students with little previous knowledge of the language usually enter the progression at Chinese 3A.
• Chinese 3 (post VCE) entry point: Students who have completed VCE Chinese (Second Language or IB equivalent) or have an equivalent language level usually enter the progression at Chinese 3 Post VCE.
• Chinese 5 entry point: Non background students with lower advanced knowledge of the language usually enter the progression at Chinese 5.
• Chinese 7 entry point: Students who have a Chinese-speaking background and minimal literacy skills usually enter the progression at Chinese 7.
• Chinese 9 entry point: Students who have a Chinese-speaking background and limited literacy in Chinese usually enter the progression at Chinese 9
• Super Advanced Entry: This is an entry point only available as a minor and is for students who have completed secondary education in a Chinese environment.

Students will have their appropriate entry point determined by the Chinese Program, based on evidence of prior learning and/or results of a placement test as required. Students completing a major in Chinese (except those entering at Chinese 1 entry point) will usually undertake 25 points at level one, 37.5 points at level two and 37.5 points at level three.

Students completing a major in Chinese who enter at the Chinese 1 entry point will usually undertake 25 points at level one, 50 points at level two and 50 points at level three.

Students completing a minor in Chinese will usually undertake 25 points at level one, 25 points at level two and 25 points at level three.

CHINESE 1 ENTRY POINT

Chinese 1 entry point - Level 1

Students completing a Chinese major or minor with a Chinese 1 entry point are required to complete the following subjects (25 points).

Chinese 1 and Chinese 2 were formerly called Chinese 1A and Chinese 1B respectively

Chinese 1 entry point - Level 2

Students completing the Chinese major with a Chinese 1 entry point are required to complete the following subjects (50 points).

Students completing the Chinese minor are only required to complete Chinese 3A and 4A (25 points).

Chinese 1 entry point - Level 3

Students completing the Chinese major with a Chinese 1 entry point are required to complete the following subjects (50 points).

• CHIN30008 Chinese 5, CHIN30009 Chinese 6, CHIN30003 Chinese News Analysis (37.5 points) and;
• One of CHIN30010 Modern Chinese Literature or CHIN30011 Great Chinese Classics (12.5 points).
  
  

Students completing the Chinese minor with a Chinese 1 entry point are only required to complete Chinese 5 and Chinese 6 (25 points).

CHINESE 3A ENTRY POINT

Chinese 3A entry point - Level 1

Students completing the Chinese major or minor with a Chinese 3A entry point are required to complete the following subjects (25 points).

Chinese 3A entry point - Level 2

Students completing the Chinese major with a Chinese 3A entry point are required to complete the following subjects (37.5 points).

Students completing the Chinese minor with a Chinese 3A entry point are only required to complete Chinese 5 and Chinese 6 (25 points).

Chinese 3A entry point - Level 3

Students completing the Chinese major with a Chinese 3A entry point are required to complete the following subjects (37.5 points):

• CHIN30011 Great Chinese Classics, CHIN30003 Chinese News Analysis and CHIN30024 Understanding the New Media in China

Students completing the Chinese minor with a Chinese 3A entry point are required to complete Great Chinese Classics or Chinese News Analysis or Understanding the New Media in China (25 points).

CHINESE 3 (Post VCE) ENTRY POINT

Chinese 3 (Post VCE) entry point- Level 1

Students completing the Chinese major or minor with a Chinese 3 (Post VCE) entry point are required to complete the following subjects (25 points).

Chinese 3 (Post VCE) entry point - Level 2

Students completing the Chinese major with a Chinese 3 (Post VCE) entry point are required to complete the following subjects (37.5 points).

Students completing the Chinese minor with a Chinese 3 (Post VCE) entry point are only required to complete Chinese 5 and 6 (25 points).

Chinese 3 (Post VCE) entry point - Level 3

Students completing the Chinese major with a Chinese 3 (Post VCE) entry point are required to complete the following subjects (37.5 points):

• CHIN30011 Great Chinese Classics, CHIN30003 Chinese News Analysis and CHIN30024 Understanding the New Media in China

Students completing the Chinese minor with a Chinese 3 (Post VCE) entry point are required to complete either Great Chinese Classics or Chinese News Analysis or Understanding the New Media in China (25 points).

CHINESE 5 ENTRY POINT

Chinese 5 entry point - Level 1

Students completing the Chinese major or minor with a Chinese 5 entry point are required to complete the following subjects (25 points).

Chinese 5 entry point - Level 2

Students completing the Chinese major with a Chinese 5 entry point are required to complete the following subjects (37.5 points).

Students completing the Chinese minor with a Chinese 5 entry point are only required to complete Chinese 7 and Chinese 8 (25 points).

Chinese 5 entry point - Level 3

Students completing the Chinese major with a Chinese 5 entry point are required to complete:

• CHIN30011 Great Chinese Classics, CHIN30003 Chinese News Analysis and CHIN30024 Understanding New Media in China (37.5 points).

Students completing the Chinese minor with a Chinese 5 entry point are required to complete Great Chinese Classics or Chinese News Analysis or Understanding New Media in China.

CHINESE 7 ENTRY POINT

Chinese 7 entry point - Level 1

Students completing the Chinese major or minor with a Chinese 7 entry point are required to complete the following subjects (25 points).

Chinese 7 entry point - Level 2

Students completing the Chinese major with a Chinese 7 entry point are required to complete the following subjects (37.5 points).

Students completing the Chinese minor with a Chinese 7 entry point are only required to complete Chinese 9 and 10 (25 points).

Chinese 7 entry point - Level 3

Students completing the Chinese major with a Chinese 7 entry point are required to complete three subjects from the following list (37.5 points).

Students completing the Chinese minor with a Chinese 7 entry point are required to complete two subjects from the following list (25 points).

CHINESE 9 ENTRY POINT

Chinese 9 entry point - Level 1

Students completing the Chinese major or minor with a Chinese 9 entry point are required to complete the following subjects (25 points).

Chinese 9 entry point - Level 2

Students completing the Chinese major with a Chinese 9 entry point are required to complete the following subjects (37.5 points).

Students completing the Chinese minor with a Chinese 9 entry point are only required to complete Chinese Cinema, and Chinese Economic Documents (25 points).

Chinese 9 entry point - Level 3

Students completing the Chinese major with a Chinese 9 entry point are required to complete the following subjects (37.5 points):

• CHIN30005 Advanced Chinese Translation, CHIN30007 Advanced Seminar in Chinese (25 points) and;
• One of CHIN3001 Classic Chinese Civilization or CHIN30002 Taiwan and Beyond: Chinese Settler Culture (12.5 points).

Students completing the Chinese minor with a Chinese 9 entry point are required to complete Advanced Seminar in Chinese, and one of Advanced Chinese Translation, Classic Chinese Civilization or Taiwan and Beyond: Chinese Settler Culture (25 points).

CHINESE SUPER ADVANCED ENTRY POINT

Chinese Super Advanced - Level 1

Students completing the Chinese Super Advanced minor are required to complete the following subjects at level 1 (25 points).

Chinese Super Advanced - Level 2

Students completing the Chinese Super Advanced minor are required to complete the following subjects at level 2 (25 points).

Chinese Super Advanced - Level 3

Students completing the Chinese Super Advanced minor are required to complete the following subjects at level 3 (25 points).
