Linguistics and Applied Linguistics

The course structure below applies to re-enrolling students who commenced their studies prior to 2008 course 105AA is no longer taking applications.

A major in linguistics and applied linguistics usually consists of eight 12.5 subjects, totalling 100 points. It comprises:

• one first-year subject in linguistics and applied linguistics (12.5 points). The Secret Life of Language is the recommended first-year subject. Students may enrol in more than one first-year subject if they wish; and

• seven second/third-year subjects in linguistics and applied linguistics including at least five core subjects.

Students who commenced their degree before 2007 will need to complete 112.5 points toward this major in order to complete the major. For the specific major structure you must follow, refer to the handbook produced in the year you commenced your degree, available online at https://psc.unimelb.edu.au/.

Second/third-year core subjects

All students must complete at least five core subjects. They must choose at least three of the following:

• Phonology
• Phonetics
• Syntax
• Semantics

and one of the following:

• Discourse and Pragmatics
• Language, Society and Culture
• Language and Identity

and one of the following:

• First Language Acquisition
• Second Language Learning and Teaching
