Course Overview:

This course is in teach-out mode and is not accepting new applications.

The Master of Advanced Nursing Practice (Mental Health) is a graduate coursework degree consisting of 150 points, Normally taking 2 Years of full-time study or part-time equivalent. The course offers a clinical practice component focused on a selected specialty area of nursing. Admission is based on at least one year of paid employment as a Registered Nurse working in acute or sub-acute healthcare facility within the five years prior to applying for the course, plus current employment and clinical support in a work environment that provides clinically relevant experience in the selected specialty area of nursing.

The Master of Advanced Nursing Practice (Mental Health) prepares graduates to be clinically proficient, professionally articulate and ready to assume a major responsibility in developing new professional roles, devising new models of care and overseeing dynamic changes to practice. In the second year two streams are offered.

Stream 1 comprises 150 credit points (10x 12.5 + 1x 25 capstone subject) of coursework.

Stream 2 comprises 100 credit points of coursework (including 1 x 25 credit point research methods and 1 x 25 point capstone subject) and a 50 credit point minor thesis.

Learning Outcomes:

As a graduate of the MANP you will have:

  • a comprehensive knowledge of relevant research literature related to your field of practice
  • the capacity to critically think, problem-solve, seek, retrieve and evaluate information
  • the ability to analyse the socio-political influences on nursing practice
  • the ability to explore and evaluate the status of (and potential for) advanced nursing practice in national and international contexts
  • be able to undertake an assessment of your practice, develop a plan and complete a planned program of knowledge and skill development
  • achieve mastery of knowledge and skills to support extension to practice and the development of therapeutic and evidence-based nursing interventions in your work environment
  • the ability to develop, implement and undertake new and innovative practices within legislative and professional boundaries
  • attained oral and written communication skills to support advanced practice
  • developed planning, time management and teamwork skills to support advanced practice
  • knowledge and skills to support culturally competent practice, leadership and/or education relevant to advanced practice in your chosen specialty practice

Entry Requirements:

1. A Bachelor of Nursing (or equivalent qualification);

2. At least one year full time equivalent employment as a Registered Nurse working in mental healthcare service within the preceding five years from the time of application;

3. A Graduate Diploma in Nursing Practice (Mental Health) or equivalent qualification

4. Meet the University of Melbourne's English language requirements
