Creativity, Arts Practice and Community

This subject examines links between creativity and arts practice in adult communities. It explores opportunities for learning, social and community renewal and cultural action afforded by community engagement with arts practice in a wide range of contemporary ‘non-arts’ contexts.
Students will be introduced to the principles of applied arts theory and practice, and will experience ‘applied arts learning on-site, in ‘real communities’. Through workshops, seminars and field work, students will have the opportunity to develop arts skills in a specific arts discipline or across a range of arts disciplines and will be introduced to theories of creativity, life-long learning, and community cultural development.

Students will:

• develop an understanding of the principles of applied arts in theory and practice;
• observe and critique applied arts practice in community settings;
• develop and apply skills in a specific arts discipline appropriate to an appropriate ‘applied arts’ setting;
• work collaboratively with students and community members in an arts based project;
• develop an understanding of theories of creativity and community cultural development.

There will be two items of assessment.
Item 1: Field Report, including observation and analysis of an applied arts setting 30%, 1200 words. Due Mid Semester

Item 2: Collaborative applied arts project including a written critical analysis of practice. 70%
Equivalent to 2800 words. Due End of Semester

Attendance at all classes (tutorial/seminars/practical classes/lectures/labs/online classes) is obligatory. Failure to attend 80% of classes will normally result in failure in the subject.
