Research Project In Public Health

This subject has the following teaching availabilities in 2015:

170 hours

Students must have an average mark of at least 70% in all recommended subjects to be eligible to enrol in the research project. Where this is not met, students with work experience in a relevant field of research with documented output will be considered.

Entry into the research project in specific streams may require fulfilment of recommended subjects. An outline of stream recommended subjects will be available to students. Further specific prerequisite / corequisite subjects will be determined in consultation with the subject coordinator.

The Research Project is a capstone option within the Master of Public Health. Within the Research Project students will work in their chosen area of study with an appointed supervisor. Students will have the opportunity to undertake a literature review, develop research questions and undertake the research activities required to answer their research question. Activities include analysis of data, a systematic or narrative review of the literature, a small evaluation of a health program, a small qualitative research study, or the development of a research protocol. Some activities are only available in specific streams of the course.

Upon completion of this subject, students should have demonstrated their ability to:

• critically appraise the existing research evidence in a specific area
• formulate a research question based upon a synthesis of the existing research evidence
• design and justify an appropriate research method to answer the research question
• conduct or evaluate research in a specific area and summarise, analyse and interpret research findings
• Communicate research effectively and appropriately in oral and written form to an audience.
• Reflect on the research process undertaken and the opportunity for future improvements

• An oral presentation of 15 minutes (10 minute presentation, 5 minutes questions), due during the sixth week of the semester (15%)
• An oral presentation of 20 minutes (15 minutes presentation, 5 minutes questions), due during the eleventh week of the semester (20%)
• A written research report of 5000 to 8,000 words, Students must pass the written research report (hurdle), due during the examination period (65%)
