Students will continue the program of practical study commenced in earlier Music Performance subjects. Vocal and instrumental students will further develop their technique and awareness of the stylistic and interpretative characteristics of the repertory studied with an individually designed program of suitable technically-based repertoire in preparation for an end-of-semester examination.

In order to contextualise their education within the best practices of local, national and international standards, students are expected to work competently and productively as team members both alone and in groups, for example participation in individual lessons and Concert Class/Orchestral related ensembles. In order to ensure the highest level of performance preparation, 100% attendance is expected.

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

• design a more complex recital program
• demonstrate growing artistic maturity in the preparation of recital repertoire
• perform the component works of a program with developing musical understanding
• display a level of instrumental or vocal craft appropriate to the level of the repertoire presented.

Students should also develop skills in:

• recital performance presentation and evaluation
• historical appreciation of more complex repertoire development
• developing best performance practice skills within individual and/or group settings

End of semester 20 minute examination on prescribed content from the appropriate instrumental or vocal area syllabus (100%).

Hurdle requirements

100% participation in instrumental or vocal class, unless approved by head of area.

100% participation in concert class or orchestral realted ensemble (for strings, woodwind, brass and percussion) unless approved by head of area.

This subject is not available as a breadth subject.

Students who have studied this subject should further develop and enhance:

• problem solving skills
• skills in critical thinking and self-evaluation.

Students must submit a Practical Examination Program Approval form to the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music no later than the end of week eight of the semester in which the examination is to occur.
