Prerequisites:

For students in the 200 point program, JOUR90005 Video and Audio Journalism and JOUR90001 Researching and Writing Stories must be taken previously.

Corequisites: None
Recommended Background Knowledge:

Students in the 150 and 100 point program who do not have video and audio journalism experience are recommended to take JOUR90005 Video and Audio Journalism (previously Journalism Futures) before attempting this unit.

Subject Overview:

This subject builds on basic video and audio journalism skills and takes them to an advanced level, with an emphasis on video and audio reporting across multimedia platforms under tight deadline conditions in newsroom environments, for news and longer-form broadcast and multimedia current affairs reporting.

Learning Outcomes:

Students who successfully complete this subject should:

  • be able to use video and audio equipment, and multimedia tools and platforms, to compile news and current affairs reports and to enhance journalistic storytelling;
  • demonstrate a high-level of written and oral communication skills;
  • have developed advanced expertise in recording, writing and editing their own work;
  • be able to apply high level research skills to investigate news stories;
  • demonstrate an advanced and practical understanding of how video, audio and multimedia news stories are put together;
  • be equipped to critically reflect on writing challenges that journalists face across different media and

Assessment:
  • Attendance and participation in class based exercises, conducted throughout the teaching period equivalent to 2,000 words (40%)
  • Participation in one team based project in online or video production due in Week 4 equivalent to 1,000 words (20%)

  • Major Assignment to deadline – current affairs multimedia report, completed by end of teaching period equivalent to 2,000 words (40%)

Readings and examples of multimedia Journalism will be made available through the LMS and/or as a compiled subject reader.
