Due to overlap in subject content, students who have completed 116-078 (in 1999 and 2001) are not eligible to enrol in this subject. Previously available as Modern Italian Novel. Students who have completed the subject at Level 4 (ITAL40012 Italian Fictions) are also not allowed to enrol in this subject.

This subject will introduce students to the study of significant literary and/or visual and written texts, and may include the study of particular genres, authors, critical methodologies, literary and cultural schools or movements, cultural and/or literary developments in a particular century. Topics will vary according to current research and teaching interests of academic staff and various approaches and methodologies will be proposed.

Students who complete this subject will:

• interpret and analyse literary texts in Italian in historical and contemporary Italian social and cultural contexts
• strengthen the capacity to use linguistic structures in an academic context. Improve the ability to communicate effectively in Italian both in writing and speaking
• specialize in Italian literary studies and cultural studies and gain the skills to conduct research on contemporary Italian cultural and historical issues through the analysis of literary texts
• apply cultural studies and literary studies research methods to the study of Italian contemporary cultures and society
• appreciate Italian culture and history by studying the development of post-unification Italy through literary representation and criticism
• develop an increasing ability to analyze Italian language and culture from the perspective of a culturally aware global citizen
• demonstrate increasing autonomy and independent research skills as well as a deeper knowledge of Italian culture and language
• act confidently in Italian-speaking milieus and demonstrate an awareness of cultural and historical contexts in Italy

• A 7-10-minute class paper, equivalent to 600 words, due during the semester [15%]
• An essay of 2000 words due duriung the examination period [50%]
• A 1-hour final written test, equivalent to 1000 words, during the examination period [25%]
• Participation in class throughout the semester [10%]

This subject has the following hurdle requirements:

• Regular participation in tutorials is required with a minimum of 75% attendance.
• All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.

Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day and in-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked.
