Subject Overview:

Students will further develop their communicative abilities in Italian and their understanding of Italian culture by engaging with authentic texts, written, spoken and audiovisual. A range of media and activities will be used to explore key themes in modern Italian society. The acquisition of structures such as the subjunctive and the passive will significantly extend students’ ability to understand and discuss information and views in Italian in both spoken and written form.

Learning Outcomes:

Students who complete this subject will:

  • interpret and analyse a range of different popular media genres such as film and television and short literary texts
  • use an appropriate vocabulary from a range of communicative situations about contemporary themes. Use complex grammatical and syntactic structures of Italian and produce connected text on topics that are familiar and of personal interest
  • continue to apply relevant research and analytical skills to the study of Italian contemporary and cultural themes
  • continue to develop an increased knowledge of Italian cultural traditions and practices, and to appreciate regional diversity in Italy
  • continue to develop a differentiated and informed understanding of self and other and of cross-cultural exchange - apprehend and appreciate features of the interaction of language and identity
  • continue to improve time management and planning skills - improve analytical skills, learning strategies and the ability to process, organize and integrate information
  • continue to develop an improved understanding of Italian-speaking contexts and target culture, and work effectively in a cooperative way using Italian and English as a media
Assessment:
  • 3 assignments, equivalent to 400 words each due in weeks 4,9,11 [30%]
  • 5 minutes oral presentation, equivalent to 400 words due from week 5 to week 12 [10%]
  • 1 hour written test, equivalent to 1000 words due in week 7 [25%]
  • 1.5 hour written exam, equivalent to 1400 words during the examination period [35%]

This subject has the following hurdle requirements:

  • Regular participation in tutorials is required with a minimum of 75% attendance.
  • All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.

Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day and in-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked.
