Prerequisites:

To enrol in this subject, you must be admitted in the Graduate Certificate in Arboriculture (GC-ARBCULT). This subject is not available for students admitted in any other courses.

Subject Overview:

This subject aims to provide students with an understanding of the impact of the invasion of trees by pests and other parasitic organisms in urban environments. Students will gain an understanding of the identification of common pest and disease species; understand the symptoms displayed and how to manage the pests and diseases of trees. They will gain an understanding of integrated pest control concepts, pest control measures and the fate of chemicals in the environment and integrated pest management. The subject will be delivered through attendance at a six day intensive workshop.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • Discuss the symptoms displayed by tree pests and diseases
  • Analyse and manage common tree pests and diseases on trees;
  • Discuss the sustainable use of chemicals in the environment, and their safety.
Assessment:
  • Online discussion (1500 words in length) - 20%
  • Short tests/examinations (3 x 30 minutes duration) - 30%
  • Assignment (3000 words in length) - 50%
