Subject Overview: MS Excel features including formulae and ranges, altering worksheet appearance, workbook management, transferring data, analysis and manipulation tools. Visual Basic for Applications including user defined functions and macros. Application of programming to a range of financial problems.
Learning Outcomes: On successful completion of this subject students should be able to:
  • Use many of the advanced, built-in features of Microsoft Excel;
  • Explain the principles of object orientated programming;
  • Integrate various programming structures and concepts to build complex programs;
  • Design computer programs that implement solutions in an efficient and effective manner;
  • Apply financial modelling techniques to a variety of problems in finance;
  • Implement various finance modelling algorithms in the form of Visual Basic for Applications programs.
Assessment:
  • One 2-hour end-of-semester examination (50%)
  • Computer oriented assignments (50%)
