Education Policy: Negotiated Project

This subject has the following teaching availabilities in 2015:

340 hours total time commitment.

Candidates must have completed at least 50 points in the Master of Education Policy (International) 695AA before undertaking EDUC90150.

This subject comprises the [AQF] Capstone experience for this course. Drawing on theory, knowledge and skills developed throughout the Master of Education Policy (International), students will complete an individually negotiated project in which the student undertakes a theoretical study (for example, a substantial critical review of a particular body of literature). The Capstone project will culminate with students synthesizing the findings of their work in a written form such as a journal article or report. A hurdle requirement for this subject is that students will also provide an oral presentation of their findings, which should incorporate a reflection on the key learnings and understandings they have gained from their studies in the Master of Education Policy (International).

On completion of this subject, students will be able to:

• Carry out a substantial research-based project;
• Demonstrate an understanding of the ethical; issues associated with practitioner research;
• Analyse data and synthesise research findings;
• Report research findings in a verbal form; and
• Use research findings to advance education theory, policy and practice

There is one assessment task:

Depending on the type of project undertaken either:

• a literature review, research project or project of 10,000 words (100 per cent); or
• a detailed report of the project activity of 10,000 words or equivalent (100 per cent) due end of semester, 100%

There are two hurdle requirements:

• Attend an introductory workshop on research methods, beginning of semester
• Give a 15 minute oral presentation of an overview of the completed project to a group of peers and the course team, due end of semester

Attendance at all classes (tutorial/seminars/practical classes/lectures/labs) is obligatory. Failure to attend 80% of classes will normally result in failure in the subject.

This subject is not available as a breadth subject.

On completion of this subject, students will be able to:

• Critically apply their learning from their study of international and Australian systems to their own local policy context;
• Undertake an analysis of a local policy issue;
• Make policy recommendations on a local policy issue which take into account learnings from their international and Australian studies.
