Supervised Teaching (Second Language)

Students undertake 22 days supervised teaching practice and observation in an appropriate TESOL setting. Teaching practice incorporates appropriate presentation and practice of the target language, both spoken and written; the design, implementation and evaluation of lessons and units of work for students at a variety of language levels, the adaptation of existing materials and development of original work to meet student needs and interests; the assessment and reporting of students' language development; the establishment of collaborative relationships with other staff members and the wider school community and self-reflection and critical evaluation of one's own practice.

This subject has a TESOL or Modern Languages/LOTE focus, according to the course within which the student is enrolled.

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

• Provide a reliable model of the target language, both spoken and written, and use this in ways appropriate to the classroom and to students' level of proficiency;
• Plan, implement and evaluate appropriate lessons with little or no guidance;
• Adapt existing materials and develop original work to meet student needs and interests;
• Evaluate and assist in the development of appropriate specialist programs, including needs analysis, syllabus design, program organization and evaluation;
• Monitor, document and report on students' language development;
• Monitor, describe and critically evaluate their own teaching;
• Interact with colleagues and learn how to act as a specialist resource person within the wider school community.

Successful completion of 22 days of supervised school practicum (100 per cent)

There are three hurdle requirements:

• A posting to the subject LMS discussion board of 150 to 200 words in which the student describes the classes they are teaching on placement and the focus of the teaching they will be doing in their placement classes.
• Posting a completed MGSE LOTE or TESOL lesson plan on the subject LMS site. This lesson plan will be for a lesson the student has taught on placement, and will identify the linguistic goals of the lesson, and learning activities that lead to the achievement of these goals.
• Posting an electronic response to a peer’s lesson plan via email to their peer partner and a copy to the subject coordinator of 150 to 200 words, which provides comment on what the student sees as strengths of the lesson plan and which comments on ways in which the plan is similar or different to lesson plans written by the responding student in their teaching placement.

100% attendance is mandatory in all practicum subjects.

This subject is not available as a breadth subject.

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

• Articulate their knowledge and understanding of TESOL methodology by using it in actual teaching situations;
• Develop an understanding of the significance and value to the wider community of their knowledge about TESOL.

This subject is a requirement for local students who intend to teach in Australian schools. International students must enrol in the alternative subject EDUC90096 Supervised Observation (Second Language) unless given permission by the Course Co-ordinator to undertake EDUC90050 Supervised Teaching (Second Language) instead. All enrolling students must conact the School Experience and Professional Practice Unit in the Education Student Centre by the end of the first week of the semester to discuss placement.
