Subject Overview:

This subject focuses upon the potential for interplay and dynamic dialogue between the building blocks of performance creation. Seminars and practical/studio-based classes provide interaction with other streams to develop communication and collaborative abilities within the processes of artistic composition and a familiarity with the approaches of other disciplines. There is a focus upon light, design and an exploration of the generative processes used in performance creation (sound design/composition for performance, writing for performance, improvisational strategies). Laboratory classes allow students to explore and develop design concepts together, to experiment, and become familiar with lighting and design methods, materials and possible solutions. Seminars focus upon creative teams who discuss the ways in which collaboration can occur in the development of design/production concept and realisation.

Learning Outcomes:

On completing this subject students will:

  • gain an understanding of corporeal, spatial and temporal relationships in the constructing of performance;
  • gain an understanding of light and lighting sources as applied to theatrical performance environments;
  • understand the means by which dramatic/performance text can provide cues for spatial, lighting and sound design;
  • gain the capacity to conceptualise and design space – as occupied by a performer (performance space), as visible (illuminated space) and as an environment for action (setting of performance);
  • gain an understanding of generative writing approaches as a means to initiate concepts, source material and stimulation for the creative exploration of new work:
  • gain the capacity to collaborate with others to realise a performance design and concept;
  • gain the capacity to work individually and as a creative team in the creation and organisation of multi-disciplinary work;
  • gain the capacity to work with creative integrity and flexibility in working within different artistic forms.
Assessment:
  • Short practical projects each with specific objectives (2 minimum) - mid, end semester (35%)
  • Individual practical projects each with specific objectives (2 minimum) - mid, end semester (20%)
  • Written reports and documentation to no more than 1000 words - mid, end semester (20%)
  • 1 x 1500 word written paper - end semester (25%)
  • Hurdle Requirement 80% attendance
