Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Ethics

Please note that 467AA Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Ethics will no longer be accepting new applications as of the 1st January 2015, the program from 2015 will be offered as GDA-ARTS Advanced Graduate Diploma in Arts. The Postgraduate Diploma provides students with an advanced understanding of key concepts and issues in professional ethics. The course will appeal to professional people who want to understand both the roots of the ethic appropriate to their own profession and the wider social and ethical context in which it is located. The diploma may lead to higher degree study in professional ethics or related areas of study.

Students who complete the Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Ethics should:

• develop a sensitivity to ethical dimensions of practice in their own, and related professions;
• demonstrate a substantial knowledge of one or more areas in the study of professional ethics;
• understand the theoretical sources of the key concepts in these areas of study;
• develop a sophisticated understanding of the application of these concepts in their professional field or study area;
• develop research and analytical skills enabling further study at higher degree levels.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Ethics requires:

• thesis (37.5 points)
• two core subjects (25 points)
• three elective subjects (totally 37.5 points)

Where possible, students are advised to complete the core subjects concurrently with, or prior to, undertaking elective subjects.

The course coordinator may give permission for graduate subjects at the University of Melbourne other than those listed to be taken as electives, provided that:

• they are at an appropriate level
• are relevant to the program
• permission to enrol has been granted by the subject coordinator

The minimum entry requirement is:

• an undergraduate degree or equivalent in a cognate discipline

or

• a Graduate Certificate in Professional Ethics or a Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Ethics

or

• an undergraduate degree and at least two years of documented relevant experience in professional, public sector or business activities. Interviews may be conducted to assess the applicant's capacity to deal with the theoretical content of the course.

Students who complete the postgraduate diploma may be eligible for the MA or PhD or a masters by coursework.
