Subject Overview: |
Bourdieu’s work can be seen as offering a ‘political economy of being’. That is, a way of understanding how society operates as a process of production and circulation of being or ‘social viability’, and how people struggle to define and accumulate what ‘being’ entails. This perspective is unique in the way it offers an analytics that is both phenomenological and structural. It aims to capture both the way social subjects experience their actions and construct their surroundings, and the social determinations of this experience. The subject explores how Bourdieu’s categories such as Habitus, Illusio, Cultural Capital, field and Symbolic Violence operate as useful research tools. |
