Course Overview:

This distance program will be offered to practicing medical professionals who wish to obtain further expertise in medical ultrasound for clinical practice. It is part of the nested program of courses related to the use of clinical Ultrasound. It also includes the Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Ultrasound (which will be a pre-requisites). The course is designed to provide the knowledge-base necessary for diagnostic-level performance of echocardiography and interpretation; surface ultrasound uses such as ultrasound guided procedures and nerve blocks; and other medical specialist specific ultrasound applications such as vascular ultrasound examination. The aim is to provide advanced knowledge to specialist craft groups to facilitate use of ultrasound relevant to their specialty.

Learning Outcomes:

A Knowledge
Graduates of the Master of Clinical Ultrasound Degree will have acquired:

  1. a body of knowledge that includes the understanding of recent developments in a discipline and/or area of professional practice in the discipline of Clinical Ultrasound
  2. knowledge of research principles and methods applicable to learning in the discipline of Clinical Ultrasound

B Skills
Graduates of the Master of Clinical Ultrasound Degree will have developed:

  1. cognitive skills to demonstrate mastery of theoretical knowledge of clinical ultrasound and to reflect critically on theory and professional practice or scholarship
  2. cognitive, technical and creative skills to investigate, analyse and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts and theories and to apply established the practice of clinical ultrasound
  3. cognitive, technical and creative skills to generate and evaluate complex ideas concepts at an abstract level
  4. communication and technical research skills to justify and interpret theoretical propositions, methodologies, conclusions and professional decisions to specialist and non-specialist audiences
  5. technical and communication skills to design, evaluate, implement, analyse, theorise about developments that contribute to professional practice or scholarship

C Application of knowledge and skills
Graduates of the Master of Clinical Ultrasound Degree will demonstrate the application of knowledge & skills:

  1. with creativity and initiative to new situations in professional practice and/or for further learning
  2. with high level personal autonomy and accountability
  3. to plan and execute a substantial capstone experience to new situations in professional scientific practice and/or for further learning
Course Structure & Available Subjects:

To satisfy the requirements of the Master of Clinical Ultrasound must successfully complete a total of 150 points. Along the way they can complete the Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Ultrasound.

Entry Requirements:

1. Applicants must possess undergraduate qualifications sufficient to practice as a medical practitioner, such as MBBS or equivalent degrees, as a minimum entry requirement.
2. Applicants must have completed the Postgraduate Diploma of Clinical Ultrasound, or the Postgraduate Diploma of Perioperative and Critical Care Echocardiography.

Graduate Attributes:

The Master in Clinical Ultrasound selects students who have extensive prior knowledge of medicine, and the pathophysiology and treatment options relevant to the use of medical ultrasound. Following completion of the course, the graduates will have a diagnosticlevel understanding for echocardiography including transoesophageal echocardiography. They will have acquired additional knowledge within their discipline, and will be familiar with
methods of applying ultrasound related knowledge in their clinical practice. There will be a high consistency of knowledge between students within each craft group or discipline. Interactive tutorials and case reviews will allow students to articulate their knowledge and test the capability for independent critical thought. By the end of the course, there will be testing of interpretation and problem-solving skills.
