ICT in Secondary Education

This subject has the following teaching availabilities in 2014:

62.5 hours total commitment. Attendance at all classes (tutorial/seminars/practical classes/lectures/labs) is obligatory. Failure to attend 80% of classes will normally result in failure in the subject.

This subject will develop in teacher candidates an understanding of ways to use ICT in secondary education to support students’ learning. The subject will look at ways ICT can be used across the secondary curriculum and students will focus on ICT use in the subject areas in which they will teach.

On completion of this teacher candidate, the student should:

• Have an appreciation of the educational possibilities and opportunities of Information and Communication Technology;
• Understand the contribution ICT can make to supporting a range of different learning styles and abilities;
• Use generic software packages and apply common work-style procedures to new software;
• Evaluate and justify uses of ICT in a range of discipline areas and classroom situations.

The subject will contribute to students attaining the following National Professional Standards for Teachers (Graduate Teachers):

2.6 ICT: Implement teaching strategies for using ICT to expand curriculum learning opportunities for students.
3.4 Select and use resources:
Demonstrate knowledge of a range of resources, including ICT, that engage students in their learning.
4.5 Use ICT safely, responsibly and ethically:
Demonstrate an understanding of the relevant issues and the strategies available to support the safe, responsible and ethical use of ICT in learning and teaching.

• Critique of ICT use in the classroom (800 words) due early/mid semester, 40%
• Report on planning, implementing and evaluating ICT use in the classroom (1200 words) due late semester, 60%

On completion of this subject, teacher candidates will have the knowledge, skills and understanding to enable them to:
• Be skilled communicators who can effectively articulate and justify their practices as knowledgeable agents of changes.
• Understand the significance of developing their practice on the basis of research evidence;
• Use generic software packages in a variety of situations;
• Evaluate ICTs in a range of educational and discipline areas;
• Effectively articulate and justify their classroom use of ICT.
